“The Tale of Haven in the Hardwood”
Pickens, West Virginia is nestled deep in the hardwood mountain forest of Randolph County. Originally established in the early 1890s once the railroad finally reached that area, the town started booming quickly with lumber and coal mining industries, and quickly the population grew to around 1500, where it stayed for several decades.
One of the prominent families from that area was the Johnsons, most notably Lydia and Ernest. Though the couple only had two children, they legally adopted their nephew and granddaughter, after tragedies in life happened.
The family thought that they had seen the end of the bad luck but in 1948 things grew worse, when someone attacked Lydia’s home, killing three family members and wounding a fourth.
